The GenesisPlus laser passes a concentrated laser beam which passes through the nail and targets the nailbed, which is the source of infection. In this way the fungus is eradicated without any damage to the surrounding normal skin. The procedure lasts 10-20 minutes and require no anaesthetic. As it is not s surgical procedure, there is no recovery time and you can resume your normal activities straight away.
You should not feel any pain, and most patients experience a warming sensation as the laser passes through the nail. No medication is required, either before or after the procedure. Any nail polish or varnish will have to be removed prior to treatment and can be reapplied 24hrs later.
Results are not seen immediately. The laser aims to eliminate the fungus from the nailbed, and once the nail starts to grow out, you should notice that the new nail is clear from infection. This process can take 6-12 months.
Reinfection can occur if the feet come into contact with the fungus once again. As part of our treatment package we will provide detailed advice on foot hygiene and ways to prevent further fungal infections.
This type of laser is the only one that is approved by the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) in the USA. This body is part of the US Department of Health and any new treatments are put under extensive scrutiny before they are deemed safe and effective enough for approval.
